1.16.26 SUSD Weekly Message from the Superintendent

Unified Community,

As we look ahead, I want to share an update on our modernization projects—work that represents both exciting progress for our district and the real-world challenges that come with large-scale construction in today’s environment.

Our goal was to submit architect drawings to the Division of the State Architect (DSA) prior to the first of the year in order to avoid new code changes that could significantly slow our projects. I am pleased to share that we met that deadline, as did many school districts across the state. This was an important milestone and reflects careful planning and strong coordination by our team.

At the same time, we want to be transparent about the factors that may affect our construction timeline. DSA is currently prioritizing projects in the Los Angeles area due to the devastating fires, which is both understandable and necessary. As a result, approval timelines statewide may be impacted. While we are very eager to begin work this summer, DSA approval will ultimately determine when construction can proceed.

Our greatest hope is that our students and community will begin the next school year with air conditioning in the large gym. We have taken every step within our control to make that possible—including ordering the HVAC units, which are already on site.  However, without DSA approval, we are unable to move forward with installation. This was a strategic decision to not only help us be prepared to begin construction as soon as possible but also insulate us from potential cost escalation.

While our planning and projections remain hopeful, I believe it is important to share this possible scenario and the reasons behind it. Transparency matters, especially when we are stewarding public resources and managing projects of this scale.

I am incredibly proud of our facilities team and the partners working alongside us. They continue to assess all possible risks, plan thoughtfully, and establish the best timelines achievable while working closely with DSA. Their dedication and diligence give me confidence as we navigate the months ahead.

Thank you for your continued patience, understanding, and support as we work to modernize our facilities for the benefit of our students and our mountain communities.

Warm regards,
Dr. Lori Grace
Superintendent
